The Role
We're seeking a Staff Product Designer to drive design strategy for our Skills, Goals, and Continuous Professional Development (CPD) product area. You'll partner closely with our Product Manager to transform traditionally compliance-heavy workflows into engaging experiences that employees actually want to use, while establishing design standards that elevate our entire team's capability.
This role requires balancing complex regulatory requirements across industries like healthcare, finance, and aviation with delightful user experiences. You'll influence product and business strategy through senior design leadership, pioneering approaches that define industry standards in professional development and compliance tracking.
Core Responsibilities
Strategic design leadership
- Drive Skills & CPD strategy: Lead design strategy for skills management, goal tracking, and CPD features, ensuring cohesive experiences that serve both regulated and non-regulated industries
- Transform compliance experiences: Pioneer innovative approaches to make mandatory professional development engaging, turning checkbox exercises into meaningful career growth opportunities
- Influence product direction: Partner with the Product Manager to shape the roadmap, using design thinking to identify opportunities in the professional development space
- Lead multi-quarter initiatives: Orchestrate the modernisation of CPD functionality, ensuring it meets oversight requirements while remaining intuitive and motivating
- Establish design excellence: Create differentiated features that set Thrive apart in the traditionally stale compliance and professional development market
Organisational design excellence
- Build scalable frameworks: Design systematic solutions for competency frameworks, accreditation standards, and evidence collection that scale across diverse sectors
- Establish CPD design patterns: Create reusable design patterns and components specific to skills assessment, progress tracking, and compliance reporting
- Drive design system evolution: Contribute to and expand our design system with components that support complex professional development workflows
- Elevate team capability: Share expertise in compliance-driven design, mentoring team members on balancing regulatory requirements with user delight
- Document design decisions: Create comprehensive documentation for CPD and skills features, ensuring consistency as the team scales
Research & strategic insights
- Lead sector-specific research: Conduct deep research with regulated industries (healthcare, finance, aviation, legal) to understand unique compliance needs
- Map complex journeys: Document end-to-end workflows for professional development, from skills assessment through evidence submission to regulatory reporting
- Uncover growth insights: Identify how professional development features can drive user engagement, retention, and expansion in enterprise accounts
- Validate compliance solutions: Test designs with actual compliance officers and regulatory bodies to ensure solutions meet real-world requirements
- Synthesise cross-industry patterns: Find common threads across sectors to create flexible solutions that adapt to different regulatory contexts
Cross-functional partnership
- Collaborate with Product: Work hand-in-hand with the Product Manager for Skills, Goals & CPD to balance user needs, compliance requirements, and business goals
- Partner with Engineering: Ensure technical feasibility of complex competency frameworks and reporting requirements while pushing for innovation
- Support Customer Success: Create design artifacts and documentation that help implementation teams configure CPD for different industries
- Enable Sales: Develop compelling prototypes and vision pieces that demonstrate how Thrive modernises professional development
- Engage with compliance experts: Build relationships with industry specialists to stay ahead of regulatory changes and requirements
Essential Skills
- 8-12 years of product design experience, with significant strategic leadership experience in B2B SaaS, EdTech, or complex enterprise software, preferably with AI-powered personalisation at scale
- Portfolio demonstration: Exceptional portfolio showcasing strategic design leadership, business impact, and platform-level thinking across multiple high-impact initiatives
- Strategic research expertise: Proven track record of architecting research strategies that inform business direction and influence product portfolio decisions
- Organisational design leadership: Demonstrated experience establishing design standards, processes, and practices that elevate team capability and support rapid growth
- Executive influence: Proven ability to influence senior leadership, communicate with executive stakeholders, and shape business strategy through design thinking
- Cross-functional orchestration: Experience leading complex, multi-quarter initiatives requiring coordination across multiple teams and business units
Technical Skills
- Exceptional design craft: Mastery of interaction design, information architecture, and visual design for complex enterprise workflows
- Systems thinking: Expert ability to design modular, scalable solutions that work across different regulatory contexts
- Data visualisation: Strong skills in presenting progress, competency levels, and compliance status in clear, actionable ways
- Prototyping excellence: Advanced prototyping capabilities to communicate complex compliance workflows to diverse stakeholders
- Accessibility expertise: Deep understanding of WCAG 2.1+ standards, crucial for enterprise and regulated environments
- AI integration: Experience leveraging AI for personalised learning paths, skill recommendations, and automated compliance tracking
Soft Skills
- Strategic thinking: Uses design to identify opportunities in the professional development market and position Thrive as an industry leader
- Systems thinking: Creates systematic solutions for complex compliance requirements that scale across industries
- Communication & influence: Articulates design decisions to stakeholders from compliance officers to C-suite executives
- Cross-functional collaboration: Builds strong partnerships with Product, Engineering, Customer Success, and external compliance experts
- User research & insights: Conducts sophisticated research in regulated environments, navigating complex stakeholder landscapes
- Design leadership: Mentors team members on compliance-driven design while maintaining focus on user delight
Desirable Skills
- Experience with learning management systems (LMS) or learning experience platforms (LXP), B2B SaaS, HRTech, EdTech, or compliance-focused enterprise software
- Background in designing for specific regulated industries (healthcare, finance, legal, aviation) showcasing complex workflow design, compliance-driven solutions, and the ability to make administrative tasks engaging
- Knowledge of specific compliance frameworks (CPD, CME, CLE, CIPD, etc.)
- Understanding of learning science and adult learning principles
- Experience with competency management and skills taxonomies
- Track record of successfully launching compliance tools that users actually enjoy using
- Familiarity with international compliance requirements and multi-region considerations
- Ability to design flexible solutions that adapt to different sector requirements and compliance standards
